Where has summer of 2012 gone!

Wow the summer has flown by. We have been a busy family, but yet enjoying the summer also. So many things that we have done, where to start. Let's begin with the the end of the school year. All of the kids had wonderful and quite successful school years (Kasey freshman year, Grace 6th grade and Adam 2nd grade). Good grades - very proud of all of them - and they all have been promoted to the next grade for 2012-2013 school year.

So, on to the fun....

In June, Kasey celebrated her 15th birthday, which she had to share along with Gary for Father's Day - below is a picture of the artwork that the kids made for Gary this year. He now has it hanging in his office at work.

Gary and I celebrated our 18th wedding anniversary. Adam had a few play dates with friends and his first sleepover birthday party. Grace spent a few days here and there with her girl friends too, just hanging out together. The girls also performed with the Youth Praise Band at church. The youth group had written the song for a celebration day for the new capital campaign. Kasey sang and Grace played her clarinet. They put on a wonderful show.

Gary's on the side business is booming right now. He has began shooting senior pictures for the upcoming 2013 school year seniors. This has been quite a success. He has many more photo shoots scheduled in the next 2 months.

I have taken the kids bowling for some summer fun, when it was soooo hot outside that it wasn't fun to be outside. Along with many swimming dates at Grandma and Grandpa Hurst's pool. Thanks for letting us use the passes.

Next up the month of July. This was a busy one....First we celebrated the 3rd of July in Menomonee Falls with the parade and the fireworks. Grandpa Tony was the starter for the parade. He always makes it run right on time and very smoothly.

A smaller version of the fantastic University of Wisconsin Marching Band was there. They were super - worth sitting in the steamy hot 100 + degree weather to see.

And.... Gary sang with the praise team from church.

The kids and I decided to watch and enjoy it this year. What fun. It was a really good parade.

The 4th of July rolled around and we missed Mom and Dad Hurst this year, since they are on their adventure, so we invited good friends over for lunch, and just enjoyed the day.

Next up came our family trip. We headed up to Wausau to visit Gary's sister Amy and her family for the weekend, and also to participate in the Wausau ChalkFest and enjoy the hot air balloon glow and fireworks show.

Gary was a featured artist this year, so he got a fantastic square in the shade and up on the bandstand. He completed his huge square in about 8 hours.

The girls worked together this year on a square. I think that they did a really good job on Superman. I thought that based on their ages, they should have won a prize, but maybe next year.

Finally, Adam and I worked on a simple square of the Peanuts Gang. It was alot of fun.

We had a lot of fun with the Gennerman family.

Next we were off to Copper Falls State Park for some hiking and camping. It was simply beautiful, except for the bugs.

Next we continued our adventure with a road trip across the border to Minneapolis to visit Chris's sister, Shelley and her family. Unfortunately, we were unable to see Erik, but we had a lot of fun with Shelley and Rhys. We went to the Minneapolis/St. Paul Children's Museum, The Mall of America and IKEA.

Back in the car on the way home! Lots of miles put on but lots of fun.

Next up was the start of the Olympics. What fun. We watched way too much TV during those 17 days. We also had a scary time during Olympic week Gary ended up in the hospital for 4 days with numerous pulmonary embolisms. He is now feeling much better with medications, but that was quite a stressful time.

Finally, we find ourselves in the month of August.... many fun moments this month too. Adam celebrated his 8th birthday with a family party.

Next Adam was allowed to have a friend party/sleepover party to celebrate. He had a pirate party, with a true treasure hunt (thanks to his big sisters). I think the boys had alot of fun.

We have camped with friends at Silver Springs Campground. They have their own lake there. I dont' think that we saw much of the girls that entire weekend.

Kasey began drivers ed classes (she passed her written test) so now in December when she is 15 1/2 she can get her temps. She has also applied for her first job.
Grace took this picture of her sister - not bad.

Grace has been a huge help for Gary as the photo assistant during his photo shoots, along with being a model for him too.
Kasey took this one of her sister - pretty good.

Adam has played outside as much as possible.

It's hard to believe that school now begins this week for Adam and the girls have 1 and a 1/2 weeks left of summer break.  This has been a great summer.

Busy Busy Busy!!!!

Well, the Hurst's have been very busy since the last post.......

Kasey had an awards night at her school, where she received her academic letter award. Then she had a piece of artwork in the Milwaukee Regional Art Show in Oconomowoc. 30 pieces chosen out of about 300 submissions. Finally for Kasey, she had her spring choir concert - which were all broadway show songs. It was very enjoyable. Now she is looking forward to completing her final exams for her freshman year of high school - and on to summer break. Oh, and it is time to start thinking about signing up for driver's ed...... Congratulations Kasey on all of your accomplishments this school year.

Grace has her spring band concert tomorrow night - looking forward to it. she has gotten quite good at her clarinet. She also got her test results back from MAP testing at school. Her scores in Math were super high (242) the average in her class was between 215-220, Reading (231) and Language Arts (229). Smartie Pants!!!! She is having a fantastic academic year, but looking forward to not getting up so early during summer vacation. We are very proud of you Grace, can't wait to see what God's plans are for your future.

Adam received his white belt in karate from Karate America that came to his school. Now he wants to join and continue his work. We are thinking about it. He completed his 1st year of cub scouts. Reached many goals and received many patches - that Mom gets to sew on his shirt. He also completed his year at JAM (Jesus and Me - Sunday School). He certainly enjoyed his time there. He went for a visit of the third grade classroom today. Hard to believe that he is going into 3rd grade already. Where does the time go. He has learned alot in 2nd grade this year and we have found out that he really likes and "gets" Math. This seems to run in the family. We are super proud of you Buddy!

Gary has celebrated his 43rd birthday and Chris has planted all of the flowers in the yard and in all of the pots.  We enjoyed a movie this past weekend. The boys went to The Avengers and the girls went to The Hunger Games. It seems like forever since we have gone to the theatres.... but now I know why... man does it cost alot. Oh well, it was fun to do - even if it is only once in awhile. Starting to plan the summer out.... wow looks like there are many things going on already, that makes summertime fun.

See the Beauty.

Within the last week I have had many moments in time where I have just taken a step back to look to the simple things in life that bring me joy. Gary's Grandmother passed away last May and I have been caring for the orchid plant that she left behind. Now, I am not by any means a green thumb, but I really took the time to remember this plant. It has now bloomed 2 beautiful flowers and I am in awe of the simple pleasure that it has given me. I am continuing to see all that I have been given as a GIFT and to take pleasure and pride in the simple things in life. I pray that I don't take things like this for granted and that I always continue to feel blessed with every breath of life in which I have been given.

Artists, Artists at the Hurst's Home

So, we have now moved into spring..... what a fantastic time of the year. There are many things going on as we enter the last legs of the school year.

We just got a letter home from the Waukesha County Executive regarding Grace's artwork being on display at the Waukesha County courthouse, it is an oil pastel picture. (see the letter below) She also had gotten called down to the office and they gave her a letter that we need to sign to donate her egyptian picture (below also) to the PERMANENT collection at Aurora Advanced Healthcare in Menomonee Falls..... So if you are ever there for medical reasons - take a look for her picture. Congrats Grace.

Adam's school also had their art work displayed in the Menomonee Falls Library, and this is his drawing..... for 2nd grade I think he did a great job....

I guess all of my children have their Dad's talents.

Exciting day with the Family

It was a cloudy, rainy Friday, March 30th but it was a wonderful day to celebrate our girls.

video

Grace participated in a 6th grade music recital. (see video above). She did a fantastic job - we are very proud of her and her enjoyment of the clarinet. Right after that we all headed up to Madison for Kasey's Youth Art Month Awards Ceremony.

Kasey had her self-portrait chosen as one the South-Eastern regional award winners and then it headed up to the capital to be hung on the 2nd floor of the rotundra. It was there for the last month and now her art teacher is putting it into the Scholastic Art Award competition. Unfortunately we won't have the original at our house for awhile yet - but here are a few pictures.

Finally, along with Kasey's award, she also got family passes for the Madison Children's Museum. So we walked over there and spent some time playing. Adam had a really fun time there exploring.

Last trip was a stop in Johnson Creek on the way home to do a little outlet shopping. Everyone selected something new to come home with. What a fun Friday of Family togetherness.

Ring in 2012!

New Year's Day came - we slept in for quite awhile. Thank goodness - I think we all needed it. We went to Paula and Christopher's home to enjoy the Packer game and some really good food (yet again). I think it is time to diet! Thanks for a fun afternoon Paula, and the really good spread!

The next big event came up for Adam. Gary and Adam had been working on creating his pinewood derby car for cubscouts over a 3 week period. They had big plans - hopefully they could follow through. IRONMAN! Adam got to learn about different tools and actually got to use them too. Gary taught him about sawing, drilling, sanding, soldering and spray painting. I think that it was a very special time for both of them to build it together. Here are a few pictures of the process.....

So..... the big night has come.... IRON MAN was ready to race.

Ladies, Gentleman, boys and girls let the races begin.... As the night progressed and the races completed, Adam had won all but 2 races and actually won 1st place (surprising both Adam and Gary) for the 2012 Pinewood Derby for Pack 67. Congratulations Adam (and Dad!) what a fun night for all! On top of all of the excitement of the races, Adam also received his Wolf badge achievement along with some arrow points to add to his shirt. Just a great night for our boy! Thanks for sharing the night with us Grandma Micki and Grandpa Bob... and thanks for the treat buffet!

On the Girls side of the world.... Kasey and Grace have now finished up their 1st semester in their new schools. Final exams, tests and projects are now complete and the grades are in. They have done fantastic! We are very proud of both of you - Congratulations, your hard work has paid off.
